We start with good intentions and a lot of enthusiasm.&nbsp;Soon, however, we find that praying is often boring. We are no longer drawn to prayer and praying quietly fades into something we put off. As we pray less often (and less enthusiastically) we feel guilty and frustrated.&nbsp;This is why I almost gave up on prayer — and then I learned something that changed everything.&nbsp;<h1 id="03b44012-e32d-4f67-b845-045597a19c2e" data-toc-id="03b44012-e32d-4f67-b845-045597a19c2e" style="font-size: 32px; line-height: 1.2;">The Problem Wasn't My Commitment — It Was My Method</h1>I came across a book in a used book store — Praying the Bible by Donald Whitney. Dr. Whitney is a pastor, a seminary professor, and the founder of The Center for Biblical Spirituality.&nbsp;From this book, I discovered that the problem wasn’t my commitment — it was my method. I needed a new method. “Praying the Bible” became that method.&nbsp;<h1 id="cb30dc81-fba6-4439-8078-4924e7cb0e03" data-toc-id="cb30dc81-fba6-4439-8078-4924e7cb0e03" style="font-size: 32px; line-height: 1.2;">What Is Praying the Bible?&nbsp;</h1>Praying the Bible is a different way to approach prayer: being guided by Scripture as you pray. Here’s how it unfolded in my experience…&nbsp;I made the “pray better” commitment dozens of times. I would start strong and initially I felt good about it. Then, somewhere around week two, prayer started to feel like an obligation at which I was failing. It seemed dry, repetitive, and was hard to sustain.&nbsp;If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Almost every Christian shares this struggle. And the struggle rarely has anything to do with faith. It has to do with how they are going about praying — their prayer method.&nbsp;Here's what I've learned: when prayer becomes a performance — trying to say the right words, pray about the right needs, maintain the right attitude — it loses its life. But when you let Scripture guide you, something shifts.&nbsp;<h1 id="6ec84de3-61ce-4ea6-a103-982009ae7423" data-toc-id="6ec84de3-61ce-4ea6-a103-982009ae7423" style="font-size: 32px; line-height: 1.2;">How It Works in Practice</h1>Praying the Bible means using Scripture to direct your prayer. You read a passage slowly, and you reflect on the words — letting the text guide your thoughts. As you meditate on what you are reading, you pray about what comes into your mind.
