Does it ever seem like to you that God just isn’t around when you need Him? There have been many times that I wondered, “Where are you, God?”The prophet Habakkuk asked God a question most of us have also asked, “How long must I cry for help while You do nothing?”If you’ve poured your heart out to God about something urgent — and heard nothing back — you’re in good company.Over the last few issues of my newsletter, I’ve walked through nine questions that can turn that frustration into spiritual growth. Here are the final six.<h2 id="7051958f-57cd-46b1-89de-3388afbc38f8" data-toc-id="7051958f-57cd-46b1-89de-3388afbc38f8" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">Is my timing out of sync with God’s?</h2>We want quick results. God works in seasons. Lazarus stayed in the tomb four days before Jesus showed up — not because God was late, but because He was working on a different timeline than the one we’d choose (John 11:1-44). He allows time for growth to happen.<h2 id="efa10bc1-8b75-4c4b-9d49-cb6c03904296" data-toc-id="efa10bc1-8b75-4c4b-9d49-cb6c03904296" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">Is God addressing the deeper desire I haven’t named?</h2>Sometimes what we ask for and what we actually need aren’t the same thing. Proverbs 21:2 reminds us that God weighs the heart — He’s often answering the desire underneath the request, not just the words we used.<h2 id="141a323e-69fb-4334-96a6-f734a3b4fd96" data-toc-id="141a323e-69fb-4334-96a6-f734a3b4fd96" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">Am I asking for something I haven’t earned – or even actively pursued?</h2>I once taught college psychology classes where students prayed for an “A” on exams they hadn’t studied for. I know, because a few years earlier, I was one of them. Some prayers ask God to do what only effort can do.<h2 id="ee64796d-efad-4b6a-90a5-541994d8d806" data-toc-id="ee64796d-efad-4b6a-90a5-541994d8d806" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">Am I chasing two things that can’t coexist?</h2>You can’t serve two masters (Matthew 6:24). Neither can you have your cake and eat it too. If your prayer is really asking God to bless contradictory goals, the silence might be a mercy, not a rejection.<h2 id="42f7ca42-7eac-4a8e-ba63-7ad88488b7d7" data-toc-id="42f7ca42-7eac-4a8e-ba63-7ad88488b7d7" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">Is my request frivolous?</h2>Asking God to hold back rain so you can enjoy a ballgame — while a farmer two counties over needs that same rain — hasn’t considered the bigger picture (Matthew 6:7-8).<h2 id="6eec922f-f10a-4237-a407-65dfea7081bc" data-toc-id="6eec922f-f10a-4237-a407-65dfea7081bc" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">Would the answer actually hurt me, or someone else?</h2>This is the one that stops me every time. Looking back at things I once asked God for, I can see clearly now, getting my way would have cost me dearly. Sometimes the kindest thing God does is say no.<h2 id="b82c16dc-954b-48a0-8c05-60091603eb9f" data-toc-id="b82c16dc-954b-48a0-8c05-60091603eb9f" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">The real question behind the question</h2>None of this means God is distant or indifferent. It means He’s a Father who loves and protects His children. “And God gives us what we ask for, because we obey His commands and do what pleases Him” (1 John 3:23) isn’t a formula — it’s a description of relationship.So if there’s something you’ve been praying about for what feels like too long, maybe the better question isn’t “why won’t You answer,” but “what am I not seeing yet.”I’d love to hear your thoughts.
