<h2 id="533e00a1-8130-4cad-923f-634808d824c3" data-toc-id="533e00a1-8130-4cad-923f-634808d824c3" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">The Boss Who Made Her Want to Quit</h2>A few years ago I coached a client — I'll call her Erika — who came in convinced her boss was the problem. "He intimidates me. He bullies me. No matter what I do, he tears me apart. I just want out."She wasn't wrong about how hard he was to work for. But quitting wasn't really an option; she needed the job. So the real question wasn't whether her boss was difficult. It was whether Erika had lost sight of who she was actually working for.We've been exploring why work is so hard, drawing on Timothy Keller and Katherine Leary Alsdorf's Every Good Endeavor. We've already seen that work is "painful toil" in a broken world — thorns and thistles are part of the deal (Genesis 3:17-18). The question this raises is practical: if work is going to be hard anyway, how do we do it in a way that doesn't hollow us out?<h2 id="408cba6f-9821-47b7-9934-9a09c5915f2d" data-toc-id="408cba6f-9821-47b7-9934-9a09c5915f2d" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">Work Was Never Meant to Be Just a Paycheck</h2>God's first assignment to humanity was to steward His creation — to "fill the earth and subdue it" (Genesis 1:28 NIV). Subdue doesn't mean conquer for our own benefit; it means draw out potential. Applied to work, that means our labor exists to help something — or someone — become more of what it was made to be. A well-run business helps customers and employees flourish. A well-taught class helps students grow. A well-built house shelters a family. Work is service by design.That framing changes the target. If work is service, we're not ultimately working for a supervisor, a client, or a paycheck — we're working for the Lord, and it should show (1 Corinthians 10:31).<h2 id="da09f873-3668-40d5-87f0-5790f9eebb14" data-toc-id="da09f873-3668-40d5-87f0-5790f9eebb14" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">Three Ways People Relate to Their Work</h2>Yale organizational psychologist Amy Wrzesniewski studied how people across occupations relate to their work and found three consistent patterns: people treat work as a Job (just a paycheck), a Career (a ladder to climb), or a Calling (work connected to a larger purpose). Across every occupation she studied, the people who saw their work as a calling reported the highest satisfaction — not because their jobs were easier, but because their orientation to the work was different.That lines up precisely with a biblical view of work. The calling orientation isn't a personality trait some people happen to have. It's a mindset any of us can choose, because it's rooted in who we believe we're actually serving.<h2 id="82ef98bb-a6ed-4135-9fa4-1bdbe4f8e4a2" data-toc-id="82ef98bb-a6ed-4135-9fa4-1bdbe4f8e4a2" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">You're Not Working for Them</h2>This is where Erika's situation started to shift. Her boss's behavior didn't change. What changed was her frame: she began asking, before each task, who does this ultimately serve, and what has God already shown me that applies here? That single question didn't erase the difficulty, but it moved the center of gravity. She stopped outsourcing her sense of worth and direction to someone who had never been qualified to hold it.Scripture backs this up in a practical way: God places each of us where He wants us, works through us, and equips us with the specific talents the moment requires (1 Corinthians 7:17; Exodus 31:1-7). Even our growth in skill and craft over time is something He teaches us (Isaiah 28:24-29). You are not figuring out your career alone, even when it feels that way.<h2 id="e83313f1-8838-4a01-8665-bd745812fd8a" data-toc-id="e83313f1-8838-4a01-8665-bd745812fd8a" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">Wisdom You Don't Have to Figure Out Alone</h2>Because of this, work done well requires wisdom — knowing what to do when nobody has told you exactly what to do. That wisdom comes from three places: knowing God's character well enough that your decisions naturally align with it, knowing yourself honestly enough to work from your actual strengths and limitations, and drawing on the experience you've already lived through.The self-awareness piece is worth pausing on. Researcher Tasha Eurich found that although most people believe they're self-aware, only about 10-15% of workers actually are when tested — yet those who genuinely see themselves clearly make sounder decisions and bring more creativity to their work. Wisdom at work isn't just theological; it's also the discipline of seeing yourself accurately.<h2 id="a43b7900-b584-4648-a585-5b9878677c3e" data-toc-id="a43b7900-b584-4648-a585-5b9878677c3e" style="text-align: left; font-size: 24px; line-height: 1.2;">A Question to Carry Into Your Next Task</h2>Before your next task this week — the easy one and the hard one — try asking Erika's question: who does this serve, and what has God already taught me that applies here? It won't fix a difficult boss or a frustrating project.
